After Two Years of Bargaining, Video Game Workers Ratify Union Contracts

Nearly 1,900 union-represented employees across Blizzard Entertainment’s game teams and shared services ratified their first contracts after two years of bargaining. Workers from teams including World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo and Hearthstone organized across previously separate bargaining units, held demonstrations and pressed for common protections. The agreements address wages, severance, job security, remote and hybrid work, recall rights after layoffs and consultation over artificial intelligence that affects working conditions.

Why It Matters

The campaign shows workers in a rapidly changing technology and entertainment industry building a collective voice over decisions that can profoundly affect their livelihoods. Amid widespread video-game layoffs and growing use of artificial intelligence, employees sought enforceable protections rather than relying solely on company policies that could be changed unilaterally. Their coordination across numerous occupations and game teams also demonstrates how workers with different roles can act together around shared concerns about job security, compensation and technological change.
