City Residents Testify and Demonstrate over Proposed Israel-Related Divestment

Cambridge, The Bay State Banner Oct 28, 2026
Public Finance Public Testimony/Written Comments Peaceful Protest/Demonstration

Hundreds of people filled Cambridge City Hall and an overflow room to testify over two proposed policy orders that would require the city to divest from, and end certain contracts with, companies accused of supporting Israeli military operations and human-rights violations. The proposals identified companies including Lockheed Martin, Elbit Systems, GE Aerospace, Palantir and Flock Safety. Supporters argued that Cambridge should not invest public money in businesses connected to warfare, occupation or surveillance and compared the campaign with the city’s past divestment from companies operating in apartheid-era South Africa. Many wore keffiyehs, and pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside City Hall. baystatebanner.com Opponents—including Jewish and Israeli American residents—warned that singling out Israel could foster antisemitism, deepen divisions and make Jewish families feel less secure. They also questioned whether a municipal government should use procurement and investment policy to intervene in an international conflict. Jewish residents testified on both sides. In total, 352 people registered to speak; the article reported that 165 speakers supported the measures and 100 opposed them. The hearing therefore documented not only a divestment campaign, but substantial peaceful civic participation by residents holding sharply conflicting views about human rights, public spending and their community’s responsibilities abroad.

Louisiana Residents Challenge SpaceX Tax Agreement

LA AP News Oct 27, 2026
Government Transparency & Accountability Coalition Building/Community Organizing Litigation/Court Challenge

Three local residents and the newly formed Vermilion Citizens Coalition filed a lawsuit challenging how local officials approved an economic-development agreement for SpaceX’s proposed Starbase in Louisiana. The agreement exempts the project from ordinary local property taxes in exchange for annual payments of $25 million to local taxing authorities. The plaintiffs allege eight violations of Louisiana’s open-meetings requirements during four meetings involving a coastal-land settlement, the revival of a long-inactive industrial-development board and approval of the tax agreement. They contend that officials failed to provide adequate public notice, improperly amended agendas and did not livestream required meetings. The lawsuit asks the court to invalidate the government actions, potentially including the tax agreement. The plaintiffs say their case concerns transparent government rather than opposition to SpaceX itself.
