Residents Launch Petition Drive to Trigger State Review of School Closures

After approximately 75 people spoke at a school-board hearing, parents and residents formed “6,100 Voices,” trained petition circulators and began seeking the signatures required to trigger state review of a closure decision. The campaign gives families a formal method of challenging whether the district reasonably selected six schools for closure affecting roughly 2,200 students.

Why It Matters

Closing six public schools would disrupt roughly 2,200 students, reshape neighborhood school communities and affect how district resources are distributed. The parents’ campaign demonstrates that families can use public testimony and a formal petition process to obtain outside scrutiny of a major school-board decision—even though the resulting state review would be advisory and could not itself reverse the closures.
